Syracuse, N.Y. -- Say goodbye to those unusual exit pods at the Syracuse airport.
The Hancock International Airport tweeted Monday it would do away with the glass security portals that have attracted criticism and generated confusion among arriving passengers.
“The people have spoken & #SYR Airport has heard you! Goodbye exit portals/sci-fi tubes! Work has begun on a MUCH more modern/efficient exit hallway system starting w/ Terminal B,” the airport wrote in a tweet. “Arriving passengers can expect a short detour to exit to the public side.”
The airport installed the four exit portals in 2012. They cost $750,000, but saved the airport about $580,000 a year because there was no longer a need for a security guard at the exit.
Anyone who gets off a plane must exit the airport through the glass portals. As a passenger approaches, the front door opens, then closes once the person is inside the tube. After a few seconds, the rear door opens, allowing the person to leave.
They have invited so many questions that the airport dedicated a page on its website to explaining how they work, why they’re there and whether they’re used for surveillance (they aren’t).
In February, officials said they were looking at replacing the portals. Airport Executive Director Jason Terreri said at the time that the devices were one of the biggest sources of complaints at the airport.
