Amid constant changes in 2020 not even highway exit numbers are safe.
Massachusetts will begin to transition to mileage-based exit numbers in October, according to WCVB.
The change was announced last year as the state will drop its current sequential numbering in order to comply with a 2009 federal mandate.
Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Delaware are the only states that have yet to implement the change, and are at risk of losing federal funding if they do not comply.
New exit signage will include “Old Exit” signs for a minimum of two years to help the public get acquainted with the new system. Exit numbers for Route 213, I-291, and I-391 will not be changing because they are short and have exits that are generally spaced in 1-mile increments. The Lowell Connector exit numbers will not be changing as there are no mile markers currently posted along the corridor.
The state has compiled at interactive chart that shows all the exits in Massachusetts that will be changing. Each blue dot in the chart below corresponds with an exit that will be affected by the federal mandate. Each dot shows the new exit as well as the old one.
The new numbering system was originally scheduled to be implemented in the summer of 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed the construction process.
In addition to meeting the 2009 federal mandate, the mileage-based exits allows for drivers to quickly determine distances to destinations, allows for more accurate emergency vehicle responses and allows for new exits to be added without renumbering. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation anticipates a minimal impact on traffic as crews begin to replace the old signs with new exit numbers.
