Jyl DeHaven has spent her career as a realtor specializing in commercial real estate and in July joined EXIT Realty Advantage NM at 1615 Central Ave.

“Oh my gosh I love working at EXIT … it’s so nice to be with people who love the town and know it well,” DeHaven said during a recent interview with the Los Alamos Daily Post. “I learn from them every single day.”

EXIT Realty Owner Lance Eaton spoke about his excitement at having DeHaven join his team. He describes DeHaven as a visionary entrepreneur with public-private-nonprofit-academic partnership experience in real estate development, urban planning and workforce development … she has 30 years of experience owning companies and 15 years in the business of sustainability and is a builder of resilient communities.

“We are excited to have Jyl join EXIT Realty Advantage NM,” Eaton said. “She is a deeply knowledgeable, enthusiastic broker. While we have done commercial real estate in the past, Jyl’s experience allows us to really expand our commercial real estate efforts throughout Los Alamos and all of Northern New Mexico.”

DeHaven said she loves to mentor others and has several folks at EXIT that she already is working together with on projects.

“We are creating an actual commercial brand at EXIT and the sky’s the limit!” she said. “My greatest joy is figuring out how we can make Los Alamos a vibrant community and realize its full potential.”

DeHaven brokered the sale of the old McDonald’s on Trinity Drive and has contracts pending on 3500 Trinity Dr. and 1650 Central Ave.

“I’m always looking for buyers and sellers … I bring developers from outside Los Alamos up the hill often to see the possibilities here,” DeHaven said. “Anyone with commercial property interested in a buyer I would love to help in any way I can. It’s a small market here for national companies and even for regional developers we have to make the numbers work.”

DeHaven explained that nearly every time she shows a piece of property and she talks about the town developers remark, ‘Wow – why did I not know that!”

In addition to joining EXIT Realty, DeHaven is representing the Los Alamos Research Park expansion.

“In what I have seen there is not really a research park anywhere like it,” she said. “There are not typically science-based research parks that aren’t attached to a campus. This research park truly touches all nine branches of science including technology and it is located next to a world class national laboratory.”

The Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation, (LACDC), owns the research park. LACDC Executive Director Patrick Sullivan explained that plans are underway to expand the research park with a second building.

“Jyl has been very active in commercial real estate in Los Alamos over the last three years and she has a solid grasp on the market here,” Sullivan said. “She understands the community and can leverage her connections nationally to broaden our opportunities here in Los Alamos.”

DeHaven envisions creating a foundation that could partner with educational institutions to provide specific training opportunities in which students earn a certification in six months and have an automatic career path with companies seeking personnel with that certification.

“It becomes a great dance for everyone: students, educational institutions, companies – when you set up that type of collaboration – venture capital follows,” she said. “Another thing is when local companies reach a certain size and require additional space, rather than move out of town, the research park could fill that need. It’s expensive for companies to pick up and leave and it’s expensive for the state.”

Pebble Labs is staying in Los Alamos because the talent specifically for what they are looking for is here, she said, adding that the research park also could fill national and international needs and be a place of hope for high school students.

“I think there are huge opportunities here, but it won’t happen overnight, and it’s going to take everybody, I can’t do this myself … it needs the whole community to share what they know,” she said. “We are trying to do this during a 100-year pandemic, but this could be a real game changer … I think the research park will reflect the motto of the Los Alamos County: “Where Discoveries are Made”.
