DURHAM, N.C.— On Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C., the Duke and Wake Forest women's soccer squads played 110 minutes without a goal as the ACC match finished in a 0-0 draw.  This came 10 days after the Blue Devils and Demon Deacons combined for seven goals in the season opener.

For the first time in school history, the Blue Devils opened the season with three straight overtime matches and moved to 1-0-2 overall and 0-0-2 in ACC action.

"We were timid in the attacking third [today]," said Duke head coach Robbie Church.  "We had the ball a ton.  In the second half, we were running at them.  We didn't have great, quality passes.  The goalkeeper cut off three or four crosses.  We were behind defenders.  We didn't make good, hard runs at the box.  Grace [Watkins], in the first overtime, had two or three great attacks down the right-hand side.  She played a couple of balls that were there.  We just have to put those in the goal. We have to have be more fearless in the attacking third."

Duke came out in the first half and controlled possession, but couldn't get anything through the posts.  Both teams attempted one shot each over the first 10 minutes, but were blocked.

Two Blue Devil freshmen – Olivia Migli and Emily Royson – were impressive making their first collegiate starts.  Migli, a product of Haymarket, Va., attempted both of Duke's first half shots.  After the first was blocked, she came back in the 22nd minute and had a close attempt that was easily saved by Wake Forest keeper Madison Howard.

A native of Toms River, N.J., Royson was solid on the defensive end playing all 45 first half minutes and sent some excellent crosses into the box.

Duke held a 2-1 lead in shots, while the Blue Devils were flagged for six offside calls.

After featuring seven goals in the last contest 10 days ago in Winston-Salem, N.C., the two teams held a 0-0 ledger at halftime.

One of Duke's best scoring chances came in the 60th minute as junior Mackenzie Pluck found a streaking Marykate McGuire, who was able to beat Demon Deacon goalkeeper Mia Raben around the left side of the box.  The Wake Forest defense did a good job of covering the angle for McGuire and her cross was cleared out of the box.

With less than two minutes remaining in regulation Sofia Rossi of Wake Forest was taken down in the box for a penalty kick opportunity.  Ryanne Brown of the Demon Deacons stepped up and sent a shot on the ground to Duke sophomore goalkeeper Ruthie Jones' left.  Jones, who is from Charlotte, N.C., dove and made the stop.

"I thought that it [the penalty kick foul] was outside of the box, or at least on the edge of the 18," said Gyau.  "There is a VAR type monitor on the sidelines and I'm not really sure why it wasn't reviewed but Ruthie had an amazing save. I don't know if it was inside of the box, but Ruthie did her thing. She's great."

Jones was making her second collegiate start of her career and it was the first penalty kick attempt she has faced as a Blue Devil.

"She was really solid," said Church of Jones.  "Nothing really looked dangerous coming in from them. They caught us a couple of times off counters.  They got numbers forward, but she was composed and obviously made a great, great save on the penalty kick."

Duke and Wake Forest went to overtime for the second straight match and the 10th time in the series.  The Blue Devils held a 6-5 advantage in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks heading into extra time.

In the first overtime, Pluck had a great opportunity at goal as she drove into the left side of the box and sent a shot across the goal that just went wide right of the far post.  The Blue Devils then had another chance with the ball in front of the goal less than two minutes later and Pluck's attempt was saved by Raben.

Duke outshot Wake Forest, 4-0, in the first overtime.  The Blue Devils added two more shots in the second overtime and finished with a 12-5 advantage for the match.

"We had a few changes in the lineup due to injuries and things like that," said Duke redshirt senior Mia Gyau on the difference in the two WFU games.  "Also, with this game being the second game of a two-game weekend. I think that it's a first for a lot of us in a long time, playing two games in four days or so. I think that was probably a factor. Definitely, in the game 10 days ago, we had more of a killer instinct in the attacking third and we kind of lacked that a little bit today. We'll obviously work on that in training and everything and we'll be better next week."

Jones finished with two saves in the contest, while Raben and Howard combined for three saves for the Demon Deacons (0-2-1, 0-1-1 in ACC).

"I thought it was overall our best game," said Church.  "Defensively we played pretty well."

Duke will play its third straight home match Sunday, Sept. 27 as the Blue Devils host North Carolina at 3:30 p.m., live on ACC Network.
