Will Sears exit Rockaway Townsquare mall in September? - Daily Record

Morris County's largest shopping destination is losing one of its original anchor stores.

After multiple bankruptcies, reorganizations and waves of store closures, temporary job postings by Sears have indicated another round of closures, including the retailer's location at Rockaway Townsquare mall in Rockaway.

Sears did not immediately respond to a call for comment. Mall owners Simon Properties declined to comment about individual vendors.

No signs indicating a store closure or going-out-of-business sale were visible Tuesday at the Rockaway Townsquare location, and the store was conducting regular business, including in its auto center.

Employees of the store said they learned of the closure "a week or two ago" and were advised the store would close on Sept. 13.

Job postings Monday advertised temporary jobs related to the store closure, including hardware and home appliance sales, backroom staff and cashiers.

Sears is one of four original anchors at the mall, which opened in 1977. JCPenney, Lord & Taylor and Bamberger's (rebranded as Macy's in 1986) remain. Struggling JCPenney this month announced the bankruptcy-related permanent closure of 242 store locations, none of them in New Jersey.

Sears previously cut back its space at the mall, subleasing 38,000 square feet of its first floor to furniture retailer Raymour and Flanigan in 2016.

The closure would leave only two Sears left operating in New Jersey: in Hackensack and Jersey City. Sears Appliance Centers in New Jersey, including Newton and West Orange, are being rebranded as American Freight.
