BETHEL — One man was killed and his passenger injured in a two-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 89 Sunday afternoon near Exit 3, the interchange near the Royalton and Bethel town line, according to a news release Vermont State Police.

Jakim Brewer Hopkins, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died in the crash.

An unidentified passenger in his vehicle was hospitalized.

Vermont State Police closed the interstate in both directions for almost three hours, starting around 2:30 p.m.

According to police, an initial investigation showed Hopkins was driving a 2020 Kia Optima north when his vehicle “contacted the rear” of another northbound car, a 2020 Toyota Sienna operated by Patricia Carluccio, 54, of Bedford, Mass.

“This sent (Carluccio’s vehicle) into the median where it rolled several times before coming to rest on the southbound lanes of I-89,” police said. “Hopkins’ vehicle rolled several times before he was ejected.”

Carluccio was transported to Gifford Medical Center, where she was treated and released without injuries, police said.

Police said they believe Hopkins was traveling “well above the posted speed limit” and that witnesses reported him driving erratically. He was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

An autopsy for Hopkins has been ordered through the Vermont Medical Examiner’s Office.

In an email Sunday evening, State Police Capt. Michael Manley said Hopkins’ “passenger is getting treatment” at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Vermont State Police ask anyone who saw the crash to call the Royalton barracks at 802 234 9933.
