SEASIDE, Calif. – Despite a trio of players scoring in double-figures, it wouldn't be enough for the Western Oregon University men's basketball team to overcome the nearly 50 percent shooting by Cal State Monterey Bay as the Otters claimed the 82-60 win Saturday at the Otter Sports Center.

Daisone Hughes and John Morrill-Keeler led the way with 15 points apiece, while Cameron Cranston added 14 points. Hughes also added five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Cranston tallied five rebounds and two steals.

Cal State Monterey Bay (1-1) connected on 34-70 (48.6) from the field and added a 10-26 (38.5) clip from long range.

WOU (0-2) held an early 4-2 lead off a jumper by RJ Veliz nearly two minutes in. Still in front 7-6, the Otters eventually stretched the lead out to nine midway through the half. Following baskets from Cranston and Elihu Cobb trimmed the deficit back to five, CSU-MB outscored the Wolves by nine the remainder of the half to take a 42-28 lead into the locker rooms.

The Wolves tried to get back into it early in the second half with Morrill-Keeler and Yosani Clay connecting on baskets through the first few minutes, but the Otters kept sinking big shots. Having cut the deficit back to 14, CSU-MB went on a 16-4 run to push the lead out to 26.

Midway through the second half, a pair of free throws by Zach Moore helped start an 8-0 run with Hughes adding back-to-back layups and then Hughes capped the run with two from the line.

The Otters answered back as WOU was only able to get the deficit back down to 17 over the final few minutes before CSU-MB took the victory.

Levi Frankland led the Otters with 18 points, while Andrew Ferguson added 14 points and Jailen Nelson with 11 points.

WOU finished the night going 23-60 (38.3) from the field, 4-14 (28.6) from three and 10-16 (62.5) from the foul line. There were only 24 total free throws taken during the game with the Otters going 4-8 (50).

The Wolves held a 12-11 edge on points off turnovers and were close in points in the paint with the Otters holding a slight 38-32 advantage. CSU-MB got a big boost from their bench holding a 41-14 advantage off of bench points.

WOU will travel back to California this coming week when they will go to Rohnert Park to face Cal State East Bay on Friday night starting at 5 p.m. and then host Sonoma State on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
