GUNNISON, Colo.  A quirky second-half goal allowed visiting Fort Lewis College to escape Katy O. Rady Field with a 1-0 victory over host Western Colorado University Wednesday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer action.

The loss comes in the final game of the season for the Mountaineers.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Fort Lewis def. Western Colorado, 1-0
Records: Western Colorado 5-11-1 (2-9-1 RMAC), Fort Lewis 5-9-2 (3-7-2)
Location: Katy O. Rady Field; Gunnison, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game-winner came in the 60th minute on a Fort Lewis set piece that seemed well defended.
  • A free kick from 30 yards out arced deep into the box where Western goalkeeper Kaeyla Noble was able to leap high and punch the ball from danger. A Skyhawk attacker headed the ball back into the goal box where Noble chased after it, but Fort Lewis' Katie Smith arrived first and, with her back to the goal, flicked a shot over her head that somehow scraped underneath the crossbar near the left post for what proved to be the game-winning score.
  • Following that Skyhawk marker, Western leapt into attack mode. Kylie Hickox' shot seven minutes later was on frame but saved by Fort Lewis goalie Katlyn Rosenbaum. Not even three minutes later it was Casey Ober with a look on frame, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
  • In the 76th minute, Ober directed another shot, this one on frame, only to have Rosenbaum come up with a big save again.
  • And in the final minute it was Mary Wilson on a free kick that was well targeted but saved once more by Rosenbaum to preserve the Skyhawk lead.
A LITTLE EXTRA
  • Noble would finish the contest with a game-best six saves, while Rosenbaum earned the win between the pipes for the Skyhawks after a five-save afternoon.
  • Five different Mountaineers – Ober, Hickox, Casey Elnicki, Mary Wilson and Jessica Valladares – would each record one shot on goal during the contest.
  • The five wins during the season by Western were the most since the 2017 season.
  • Colleen Sienknecht led the team in goals (3), while tying with Laura Pelino for team-high points (6).
  • Five different players recorded game-winners in Western's five wins -- Hickox, Pelina, Wilson, Bridget Feely and Jessie Jacobsen.
  • Noble completes the season registering 116 saves in goal for the Mountaineers.
