ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT attackman Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) scored five goals while attackman Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) totaled four goals and an assist to lead the Tigers past Tufts, 18-16, in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals, Sunday, at RIT Turf Field.

Trailing, 9-5, with 7:38 left in the second quarter, the Tigers finished the half with four-unanswered goals, including two apiece by Commandant and Tait, to knot the game, 9-9. The Jumbos scored 2:01 into the third quarter, but RIT responded with six-straight goals during a 7-1 run to lead, 16-11, heading into the fourth quarter.

RIT (13-0) advances to play Salisbury (17-1) in the national championship game next Sunday (May 30) at Rentschler Field in East Harford, Conn. The Sea Gulls defeated visiting Christopher Newport, 18-8, in the day's other semifinal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tufts opened a 3-0 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter before back-to-back tallies by Tait and midfelder Zeb Hollinger (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) in a 1:22 span for a 3-2 game with 2:01 on the clock.
  • The Jumbos finished the first with a goal at 1:13 and started the second with another at 13:55 to retake a 5-2 edge.
  • Tiger attackman Marley Angus (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) scored twice in a 50-second span to make it a 5-4 game, but Tufts responded with two goals to lead, 7-4, at 10:22 of the second.
  • Angus bulled his way down the alley for his third goal and a 7-5 score, but the Jumbos took their largest lead of the game, 9-5, with 7:38 left in the half.
  • Commandant stung the back of the net with a 12-yard shot from the left wing in transition at 5:07 before Tait cashed in a Commandant assist to make it a two-goal game, 9-7, with 4:44 on the clock. Tait finished a short pass from attackman Larson Sundown (Basom, NY/Akron) for a man-up goal at 4:08 after a Tufts slashing penalty, before Tait tied the game from close range at 2:38 to send the teams to halftime tied, 9-9.
  • Tufts took its last lead of the game with a goal early in the third quarter, before the Tigers started their decisive run. Commandant scored in front off a nice feed from midfielder Matt Wiechers (Waterloo, Ontario/The Kiski School) at 12:34, before Sundown scored on the crease at 10:59.
  • Angus netted his fourth of the game 20 seconds later before goals by Sundown and Commandant a minute apart yielded a 14-10 lead with 7:22 left in the third.
  • Tait spun off a defender to make it 15-10 lead at 4:35, before Tufts halted the run with a tally at 2:21.
  • A laser by midfielder Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) on the run with 7.2 seconds on the clock extended RIT's lead, 16-11, heading into the final quarter.
  • Tufts strung together a three-goal run to pull within two, 16-14, with 7:48 left in regulation, but Rosenblum scored on a 10-yard shot to push the Tigers back to a 17-14 cushion with 5:22 remaining that proved insurmountable.
