East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's basketball rising senior Xavier Tillman Sr. (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Christian) announced today that he would remain eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft and plans to hire an agent.
Tillman had announced in late March that he would test the waters and gather information before making a final decision.
Statement from Xavier Tillman Sr. ...
"To Spartan Nation, We have had an amazing ride for three record-breaking years, winning three Big Ten Championships, a Big Ten Tourney Championship and going to the Final Four.
"To My Brothers: Fellas y'all know how I feel about y'all already, X wouldn't be X without the One Game at a Time group chat members.
"To My Coaches: Thank you for helping me learn to LOVE the art of film watching and develop into a vocal leader on the hardwood.
"Coach Izz: The fact that I became a trusted and respected leader in your program is the ultimate compliment. I can't thank you enough!
"Based on the feedback I've received from NBA teams I am excited to announce my intention to hire an agent and to pursue one of my lifelong dreams. I will keep my name in the 2020 NBA Draft."
Statement from Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo …
"I'm thrilled for Xavier and am very excited for the opportunities he has ahead of him. We knew that this was a very real possibility for him, but that it was going to be a difficult decision with everything going on in the world today.
"Xavier has been an excellent player and an even better person for Michigan State Basketball. He came here as a young man with a great upside and has developed into one of the best college basketball players in the country. At the same time, Xavier is a tremendous family man and student-athlete. He devoted himself to our program for three years and balanced that with being a husband, a father, an All-American caliber player on the floor and an Academic All-American student in the classroom.
"There's no one who deserves this opportunity more than Xavier and we will be here to support him in any way that we can."
Tillman, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a second team all-league selection, was selected to the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on March 9. He finished second on the team in scoring (13.7 ppg), led the team in rebounds (10.3, third in the Big Ten) and blocked shots (2.1 bpg) and was third on the team in assists (3.0 apg).
He was the only Division I player averaging at least 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocked shots during the 2019-20 season. Tillman was also the only Division I player since 1992-93 to reach those numbers, joining Tim Duncan at Wake Forest in 1996-97 and Bo Outlaw in 1992-93 at Houston.
Tillman earned Third Team All-American honors from The Athletic and NBCSports.com.
