The University of Minnesota football team was ranked No. 19 in the preseason AP poll, which was released today.Minnesota will not be competing in football this fall, as the Big Ten announced on Aug. 11 it was postponing the 2020-21 fall sports season due to ongoing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. AP voters were asked to consider all teams in the preseason poll. Moving forward, Minnesota and any other Big Ten schools will no longer be eligible for inclusion in the Top 25 because the Big Ten season has been postponed.
The No. 19 Gophers are making their first preseason poll appearance since 2004, when Minnesota started the season at No. 25. This year is only the sixth time that Minnesota has been included in the preseason AP poll, and the No. 19 ranking is the highest preseason ranking for the Gophers since they started the 1969 season also at No. 19. Minnesota entered the 1968 season at No. 15, while the Maroon and Gold's highest preseason ranking of No. 4 was achieved in 1957.
Minnesota started the 2019 season unranked but ended the year at No. 10 after posting an 11-2 record, which included wins against No. 5 Penn State and No. 9 Auburn.
The AP poll started in 1936, while the AP began releasing a preseason poll in 1950.
